    Power and Shade on our Heads

    Powering our electronics was the sun’s job on our last big thru hike. At that time we made a shelf of flexible solar panels that could attach to the top of our packs. It charged our gadgets well, but was a bit awkward to lay flat on the top of our packs. For this trip, I made lightweight sun hats for us with solar panels on the brim.

    Here Comes the Gram Weenies

    We are officially weighed in…Down to the gram!

    We’re both super excited about how our pack weights for our trans-alps trip have turned out. Both our base pack weights are nice and light, our paragliding gear comes in at about half of a standard kit and our total pack weights are looking sweet. Melody’s pack weighs 31.5lbs with 3 days food and fuel and mine is 36.9lbs with the same. Now that we can carry across the Alps!

    The Red Nozzle Ultralight Alcohol Backpacking Stove


    A Super Efficient, Continuous Feed, Compact Alcohol Burner

    I designed the Red Nozzle Stove for my wife and I for a trans-Alps Backpacking trip (well, actually Vol Bivouac trip) that we are planning for the summer of 2011. What we needed was a light, fast, very efficient alcohol stove that would work with our Snow Peak Trek 900 Ti Pots. I have built many cat food and soda can type stoves in the past but, as I started to research designs this time around I fell in love with the idea of a continuous feed compact alcohol burner. After a bit of tinkering the Red Nozzle Stove was born.

    PCT 2005: Pre-Hike Journal

    Well, it’s official, Melody and I applied for our PCT and Whitney summit permits today and ordered data and guide books for the PCT in California. I can’t believe it, we are really doing it and now the preparations have officially begun. Guess it’s time to start looking at GEAR! 😀
